Headshots don’t have to be boring. They just need to reflect YOU!
Jordan wanted clean and minimalist headshots for her session and Ivy Lane Studios provided the best backdrop for it!
To achieve clean portraits you want to think about 2 things:
Colors and busyness go hand in hand. For clean images you want clean colors. Neutral colors. Colors like whites, tans, denims, browns, and sometimes even blacks depending on your vibe! Colors reflect onto the skin so if you are to wear a bold color like red, sometimes you can get red hues on your skin or on the walls around you. Bold colors can also create busyness. If you wear a red shirt with a clean background, chances are the eyes will be drawn to your shirt, and not you. So by wearing neutral colors, you keep the focus on you and thats where you let your eyes, smile, skin tone, and natural beauty shine.
Busyness can come from many things but the 2 things I think attract the most busyness in photos are the background and the patterns/colors of clothing choices. Jordan chose solid block colors for her session. Notice there are no patters in her clothes and they are clean lined and simple pieces. Anything with a pattern draws the eye first. Think stripes, dots, words, graphics, fringe, lace, etc. To achieve this minimalist clean vibe, block colors, no layers, and simple pieces were the perfect fit.
Another thing that attracts busyness is the location you are shooting at/the background of your photos. Imagine if these were taken in a forest… totally different vibe right? What about downtown… completely different vibe! In those types of locations where you have a lot going on behind the subject, things get busy. The eye goes to the trees behind the body, the buildings off in the distance, and anything else that may be behind the subject. That is why we chose a clean studio space for these photos. We wanted negative space surrounding Jordan and whites + tans to make sure she stood out and there was nothing to distract from the focus being on her.
AND LASTLY…. if you are feeling bold, throw in a bold color in your neutral space at the end of your session to let your personality shine a little. Scroll to the bottom to see Jordans final look!
